Travel Tips for Bali

Here are some tips and tricks to help you settle in quickly on your first trip to Bali.

  • Covid-related travel restrictions:

It is important to check out the latest update on COVID 19 restrictions to enter Indonesia before visiting Bali. Domestic travelers should keep in mind that some tourist sites are closed or have limited opening hours due to the pandemic. To get the latest updates, please check the official websites of tourist attractions in Bali.
  • Arriving in Bali:

Travellers visiting Bali will be arriving at Denpasar International Airport (Ngurah Rai International Airport or “NRIA”). You can arrange for a driver to pick you up from the airport, arrange a taxi, or get a shuttle bus to other parts of the island. You can either get a taxi from one of the official taxi counters at the airport or just bargain with the taxi drivers in front of the airport and find the best deal. There is also the option of organizing shuttle transportation from the airport to several larger hotels and other properties in Bali.
  • Getting Around Bali:

The truth is that in Bali public transportation is basically non-existent. Apart from public minibuses also known as “bemo”, there is no other form of public transportation on the island. However, first-time visitors will find an abundance of taxis around busy areas, as well as Uber vehicles that are now available in some parts of Bali. If you feel confident on a scooter, you will be pleased to hear that scooters are the most popular way of transportation in Bali. However, the roads on the island are super busy and the traffic may not be suitable for inexperienced moped drivers. If you wish to explore the countryside, you can rent a bicycle in Bali.
  • Download Go Jek:

Go Jek is basically an Indonesian Uber-type app. By installing this app on your phone, you can book cars and motorbike taxis across the island. One of the app’s best features is that it tells you the approximate cost from place to place.
  • Official Language in Bali:

Although the official language is Indonesian, many locals speak the Balinese language. Due to the high level of tourist and foreign visitors, English is also widely used in Bali.
  • Currency & Money Matters:

The official local currency on the island is the Indonesian Rupiah (check exchange rates. Although you can pay with credit cards in some hotels, restaurants, and tropical bars in the urban area, the majority of places in Bali only accept cash. Therefore, it is important to always carry some cash in your pocket while exploring Bali. As for the ATMs, tourists will easily find them in the popular travel hubs. However, finding an ATM in the countryside is not that easy. So, it’s best to get some cash from ATMs while visiting touristy areas in Bali.
  • Tipping in Bali:

There is no tipping in local culture so it is not mandatory to tip for every service. Most cafes and restaurants add a service charge to the bill, and it’s courteous to leave a dollar or two for the waitstaff who served you.
